Based on the road movie about Denmark, Maciek (from Lithuania) and I (David from Denmark) learned about each other’s home country. We compared the countries and discussed differences, development and other good and bad things about our countries. Here are some of the differences we talked about:
Denmark
- People trust the system (the public sector, the police, the tax offices and other government institutions) very much
- People care about other people and are happy (and satisfied) to make a difference for others
- The system is for people – social responsibility
- People influence their surroundings
- People are not afraid of the Police
- People treat the Police with respect and some sort of status
- Unions are very strong – almost everyone is a member of a union
- Rising tax system (people with high incomes pays a lager percentage)
- People trust the government controlled medias in general
- Many leaders and workers very much about their job (it is an honour to perform good and be a good co-worker)
- The welfare system in Denmark is a fundamental thing in Denmark
Lithuania
- People are not afraid of the Police
- A policeman do not have that much status
- People do not trust the system (the public sector, the police, the tax offices and other government institutions) because corruption is a huge problem
- Not all people care about other people
- The system is not always for people (sometimes more for money and the leaders own good)
- Many people lives a passive life and do not influence their surroundings
- Unions is not very strong
- Flat tax system (everyone pays the same percentage)
- Many people do not trust the government controlled medias in terms of objectivity
- Many leaders and workers do not care enough for their job (e.g. because of the corruption)
- Many things in terms of freedom and welfare are chancing these years – it has only been a free country for less than 20 years.
